Police Chief Thomas P. Seefeld said the crash occurred along Route 22 eastbound about 4 a.m., east of Harrison City Road.
“Upon arrival, officers observed that a car and four bicycles were involved. One of the bicyclists, a 25-year-old male, was deceased, and the three other bicyclists were injured,” Seefeld said in a release.
The identity of the victim was not released pending notification of next of kin. However, Seefeld said the bicyclists were part of a church group from Ohio traveling to Altoona.
The driver of the car, a 16-year-old girl “did not have time to react prior to impact,” Seefeld said.
He said the car initially impacted one of the rear bicycles and subsequently the other bicycles became involved.
The injured bicyclists were transported to AHN Forbes Regional Hospital in Monroeville for treatment of moderate injuries.
The teenage driver of the car and her passenger, a 17-year-old girl, were not injured. The driver stopped at the scene and cooperated with the investigation.
Pennsylvania State Police are assisting with the crash reconstruction, Seefeld said.
The crash happened on Route 22 eastbound near Brick Hill Road, according to a Westmoreland County 911 supervisor.
