The American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) and the International Association of Maritime and Port Executives (IAMPE) have signed an agreement designed to strengthen their collaborative efforts in creating an industry standard for continuing education for port professionals.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed during the organizations’ first joint conference June 28 in Miami, Fla. The AAPA is the unified voice of seaports in the Americas. The IAMPE is the global organization dedicated to developing and maintaining professional standards in the maritime community.

Both AAPA and IAMPE have professional development programs based on established training frameworks. Both programs provide port and marine transportation professionals with a credential documenting successful conclusion of their coursework. The MOU mutually recognizes each organization’s program as meeting the highest of professional standards and acknowledges each other’s credentials. Ultimately, the goal of the MOU is to establish a single industry standard for certification at the highest level.

“Both AAPA and IAMPE are dedicated to shaping the future of port leadership, and taking this step further advances professional development opportunities for our industry,” said Chris Connor, AAPA President and CEO. “Quality, cost and availability are major factors taken into consideration as professionals decide on investing in continuing education. This collaboration of our organizations gives members flexibility and more options for obtaining a first-class educational experience recognized industrywide.”
