Crews on the scene of large fire at Bell Co. Recycling Center - WYMT News

BELL COUNTY, Ky. (WYMT) - Officials with the Bell County Fire Department responded to a call off of Highway 119 on Thursday afternoon, arriving to a recycling center in flames.

“We were called out to it, arrived on scene and both piles of recycled material was fully engulfed,” Bell County Assistant FIre Chief George Molnar said.

Fire officials on-scene were not permitted to appear on camera, but they said that with the help of other departments in the area and local law enforcement, they were able to contain the fire and start working to extinguish it.

“We just started putting it out and had to call other units in to assist us,” Molnar said.

Footage from WRIL in Middlesboro shows the fire as it happened, which presented many dangers to those near it.

“In the one building, we had to keep the fire away from it because of the oxygen in the settling tanks, so that was a worry there,” Molnar said.

Molnar encouraged the public to avoid the area.

“It would be safe to say, in case for some reason we’ve got to shut it down again, then they’re going to be stuck in traffic,” Molnar said.

Crews in Bell County were called to a massive fire at the Bell County Recycling Center off Highway 119 on Thursday.

Bell County Dispatch tells WYMT the call was made around 1:19 Thursday afternoon. There was no word on if anyone was inside at the time of the fire.

They add that Highway 119 is closed around the 5.5 mile marker. There is a detour available for non-commercial vehicles through Highway 197.

Crews from the Bell County Volunteer Fire Department, Pineville Fire Department, Middlesboro Fire Department, Frakes Fire Department, Bell County Sheriff’s Office, and Kentucky State Police are all at the scene.
