GRAND HAVEN, MI – The city of Grand Haven will soon have an alcohol-friendly social district operating in its popular outdoor dining area.
The city commission approved a sidewalk drinking zone on Monday, Aug. 16. Starting in the fall, patrons will be allowed to walk around downtown Grand Haven with an alcoholic drink purchased from participating establishments.
The social district encompasses six downtown blocks including Washington Avenue from Harbor Drive to Third Street and Franklin Avenue to Columbus Avenue.
Outdoor dining transformed downtown Grand Haven last summer when the city allowed restaurants to set up tables on the street for al fresco dining — a move city manager Pat McGinnis said “sort of accomplished” the goals of a social district the past two summers.

Patios created with concrete barricades decorated with planters, umbrellas, outdoor lighting and carpeting created a European vibe.
“The atmosphere, ambiance, energy, vitality, it’s happening in Grand Haven. It’s really exciting down there with or without a social district” he said.
Social districts allow bars and restaurants to sell alcoholic beverages in specially marked cups that patrons can take with them in the designated area.
Permitted by state law since July 2020, social districts have been popping up in other lakeshore communities like Muskegon, Holland and Spring Lake.
McGinnis said launching one in Grand Haven allows local businesses to “stay competitive” with neighboring communities.

An initial proposal from the Grand Haven Downtown Development Authority stretched the district to Lynne Sherwood Waterfront Stadium, but city commissioners Monday amended the western boundary to Harbor Drive.
Beverages must be served in disposable cups displaying the business name and a social district sticker, according to the proposal.
“It’s a nice change, and we’re going to continue to find ways to make it better,” said McGinnis.
Fourteen alcohol-serving establishments can choose to participate, including: Porto Bello, 12 Corners, Odd Side Ales, Kirby House, Long Road Distillers, The Grand, Anna’s House, The Tip-A-Few/Tip Two, VFW, Copper Post, Grand Armory Brewing, Eagles, Elks and Lucy’s Deli if approved for a liquor license.
The Grand Haven Main Street Social District will launch in the fall during the city’s shoulder season. It will operate Monday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
