Suspect in Lake James murder arrested after DNA was left at scene, court docs say - Fort Wayne's NBC

ANGOLA, Ind. (Fort Wayne’s NBC) — DNA collected from the suspect and beer cans he left behind at the scene resulted in an arrest in connection to the murder of an 82-year-old at her Lake James home, court documents say.

Steuben County sheriff's deputies took 29-year-old Matthew Hoover into custody Wednesday afternoon for the murder of 82-year-old Wilma Ball.

Court documents show police were called around 12:44 p.m. on June 23 about a woman who was unconscious and covered in blood at her Lake James home.

Police were told that two women had come to check on Ball after she missed their morning golf game. They told officers that her neighbor has a key to the house and unlocked it for the women and they found Ball on the bed.

While investigating, officers said they found a window near the front door of the home that was torn and pushed inwards.

Detectives said Ball lived alone and they found two socks lying inside the door that appeared to belong to a man and believed they were left by the killer.

Police also found two beer cans, one on a nightstand and one in the bathroom and collected them as evidence for DNA testing.

The probable cause documents indicate police believed that Ball was sexually assaulted. Investigators also found stab wounds on her neck with several other injuries on her body.

Her death was ruled a homicide.

Officers interviewed Ball's neighbor, who said his brother, Matthew Hoover, lives with him and may have had something to do with her death.

He said Hoover quit his job as a CNA at Lakeland Rehab and Healthcare Center in Angola and left the house the day after the homicide. He said Hoover stole his parents' truck, drove to Yorktown and left the truck at his stepfather's Yorktown home before walking to Anderson to meet his father.

Officers found Hoover back in Yorktown and say he consented to an interview and a DNA sample that was placed into evidence.

When asked what happened on June 23, Hoover said he saw several officers in the area but said he never went inside Ball's home. He said he didn't know her but would wave at her when she was outside.

He said he heard that Ball was found dead with stab wounds and that his stepfather went inside the home with Ball's friends who checked on her before police arrived.

Hoover was asked several times if he went inside her home and he denied it each time, police said.

Officers received results from the DNA tests from Hoover and the beer cans and found that the profile “is at least one trillion times more likely if it originated from Matthew Hoover than an unknown, unrelated individual.”

They said the statistical analysis provides “very strong support for the inclusion of Matthew Hoover.”

The results gave officers probable cause to arrest Hoover and he was taken into custody on Aug. 4. He appeared in court Thursday morning for an initial hearing.
