The most recent episode of HBO's satirical drama miniseries The White Lotus ended with a bang this week, as Shane and the viewer were both treated to a view of hotel manager Armond eating the ass of resort employee Dillon.
This was far from actor Murray Bartlett's first guy-on-guy scene (he previously stripped down for gay sex scenes in HBO's Looking and Netflix's recent Tales of the City revival), but it did differ from other same-sex scenes in that his character is full-on rimming Dillon.
"In the context of this scene, we wanted to be shocking, and, you know, it is shocking." Bartlett said after the scene aired. ""But I also love that it's not something that we see very often... In terms of the function of the scene, I think the shock value of that for people who are not used to that kind of... configuration of intimacy, is really brilliant."
His scene partner Lukas Gage, who plays Dillon, also revealed in an interview that the script initially called for a generic sex scene, but that he and Bartlett specifically pushed for the rimming instead, as they felt it make for a more original, unique and boundary-pushing scene. "We said, 'Wouldn’t it be more interesting if [Dillon’s] getting his salad tossed? I mean, how often do we see that on TV?'" He said. "I think it's much more interesting and more jarring to walk in on."
Fans of the show certainly seem to agree, if the reaction on Twitter is anything to go by, with the majority of responses embracing the chaotic nature of the scene (and the show in general). Gage, for his part, is all for the social media storm, saying: "I can't wait for my ass to get retweeted all over the internet."
