An electrical fire Thursday evening caused minor damage at Warren Hills Regional High School, and resulted in six maintenance staff members treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, Warren County Fire Marshal Joe Lake said.
The school’s fire alarm sounded about 7:10 p.m., indicating a problem in a custodian closet behind the auditorium in the Washington Township school, school officials posted to Facebook.
A light fixture in the closet failed and caught fire, dropping sparks onto combustible material, Lake told lehighvalleylive.com.
School officials reported the fire was quickly extinguished by a custodian.
Fire damage was limited to the closet, but the surrounding area saw some smoke and water damage, Lake said. There was no structural damage to the building, according to the school’s Facebook post.
The building was evacuated, and none of the six workers treated at the scene were taken to the hospital, according to lake.
“At this time, we are working to ventilate the building due to the smoke as a result of the fire,” school officials told the community via Facebook on Thursday night. “At this time, we are planning to open both schools on time tomorrow (9/24). Should anything change with our schedule tomorrow, we will notify you immediately.
“Thank you to the Washington Township, Washington Borough, Mansfield Fire Departments, Rescue Squads, and the Washington Township PD for their assistance this evening.”
