Grant County is looking for another location to build a new jail after the Port of Ehrata rejected a site on its land.
Port commissioners voted unanimously against selling land near the now closed Grant County Work Release Center.
Commissioners say the decision was based on their mission statement, which calls for the land to be used to create jobs.
They say the land requested by the county sits in the middle of the Port’s industrial park.
Grant County voters approved sales tax money to build a new jail in 2019.
Port of Ephrata Commissioners released a statement that reads partially as follows:
“The Commission held a special meeting on August 30, 2021, to make a determination on the land sale request. The Commissioners decision was based on the Port’s Mission
Statement, community input, and information provided by the county regarding the design and infrastructure needs of the new facility. The commission decided unanimously to not sell the county the requested land in the center of the Port’s industrial park. This decision has been communicated to the County so they can continue to move forward on this project. The Commission, through the Executive Director, has reached out to the County to discuss alternate locations.”
