The city of Port Townsend unanimously approved extending its moratorium on utility shut-offs at its meeting Monday, Aug. 16.

The moratorium will suspend shut-offs, late fees, and penalties for utility accounts through Dec. 31.

The move marked the fifth time the city has extended the moratorium since March 2020, assisting customers experiencing financial challenges from the coronavirus pandemic.

Gov. Jay Inslee issued a final utility moratorium through Sept. 30, and encouraged utility providers to work with customers who had past-due accounts, and to offer extended payment plan options.

As of July 31, there were 74 customers over 90 days past due for $35,238 in utility charges, with $67,303 due in total, including fees and penalties.

The city of Port Townsend will waive all late fees and penalties for utility accounts through Dec. 31.
