With great sadness, the Massachusetts State Police announced the passing of Explosives Detection K9 Maura, a 13-year-old German Shepherd who served at the Boston Marathon bombing.
“Maura served the citizens of our state and beyond with exemplary dedication, courage, and loyalty for 12 years,” Massachusetts State Police said in a statement.
Maura was a member of the State Police Bomb Squad assigned to the Fire Marshal’s Office with her partner, Sgt. Neil Calnan. Her main mission was protecting the hundreds of millions of travelers at Logan Airport, according to the statement.
She also worked to maximize public safety at specialized security operations in Massachusetts, including helping secure the scene at the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013.
“Maura’s exceptional dedication and work ethic were noted and admired by all who worked with her,” the statement read.
The beloved dog recently developed a serious medical issue, according to state police, passing away on Thursday.
“She was a great dog, a loyal partner, and a beloved member of the Massachusetts State Police and Calnan families,” the statement read. “Thank you for your service Maura. Only green fields to run, now, and play time and peace always.”
