BAY CITY, MI -- The new high school girls basketball season is upon us and it’s time to get back in the bleachers and catch some hoops action.
MLive sets the stage for the 2021-22 campaign by offering a look at the girls basketball scene in the Bay City area, with a glance at the top seniors, top juniors and top games to watch.
Here, we present a glance at 10 must-see games from the 26-team MLive Bay City coverage area.
Bay City Western at Saginaw Swan Valley (7:30 p.m., Nov. 30): Bay County Sports Hall of Famer Dan Snover returns to the sidelines as head coach of Western and this marks his debut.
Reese at Bay City Western (7 p.m., Dec. 3): Reese is perennially tough Division 3 squad and it isn’t easing into the season, taking on a Division 1 foe down the road in the season opener.
Midland at John Glenn: (7 p.m., Dec. 7): Glenn plays its first home game without Cory Snider on the bench since 2009. First-year coach Alex Karapas makes his homecourt debut against a familiar foe. Karapas formerly coached at Midland Dow.
Standish-Sterling at Frankenmuth (7:30 p.m., Dec. 21): Expect both of these teams to be state-ranked, making this a clash of powers.
Oscoda at John Glenn, (7 p.m., Jan. 4): Oscoda keeps challenging itself as a program, and it has its rewards. Are the Owls ready to bring home a win in one of these tests?
Bay City All Saints at Pinconning (6 p.m., Jan. 10): A little Bay County feud is settled when these rivals meet.
John Glenn at Essexville Garber (6 p.m., Jan. 14): One of the Bay City area’s great girls basketball rivalries is Glenn-Garber. That shouldn’t change with a new coach at Glenn.
Standish-Sterling at Saginaw Nouvel (7:30 p.m., Feb. 1): When these teams last met, it was an all-or-nothing battle for the Tri-Valley West title. They figure to be at the forefront yet again.
Bay City Western at Bay City Central (5:30 p.m., Feb. 15): Girls basketball is where this crosstown rivalry shines. Expect an all-out war when they meet for the second time this season.
Beaverton at Clare, (7:30 p.m., Feb. 17): Expect the Jack Pine Conference to be tightly contested once again. And when these two square off for the second time, the league title might lie in the balance.
