Seekonk, MA (WLNE) – The Bristol County District Attorney’s Office said the suspect who died at the scene of an investigation in Seekonk had fired an AK-47 at police.
District Attorney Thomas Quinn said Seekonk Police were originally called to a business on Route 6 about an alarm indicating a break-in. When they arrived, they saw the business had been broken into and they saw a suspect leaving the scene. A short time later, they spotted the suspect in another parking lot on Route 6. At that time, investigators said the suspect drove off and wrecked after losing control of the car near School Street.
When police arrived at the crash scene, Quinn said the suspect opened fire on officers with a 7.62mm AK-47. Quinn said officers returned fire.
Once a SWAT team determined there was no longer a threat, emergency responders approached the car and found the suspect had died. The suspect was the only person in the car.
The suspect’s identity and cause of death have not been released yet. The investigation is ongoing.
Earlier in the day, Quinn tweeted, “State Police Detectives and prosecutors from our office are on scene in Seekonk investigating a fatality near the intersection of Rte. 6 and School St. Investigation is ongoing.”
Seekonk Police and Massachusetts State Police both responded to the area Sunday morning. Seekonk Police said via Twitter that it is an active investigation. They asked everyone to avoid the area.
ABC6 Reporter Dominique Turner was at the scene. She said a police photographer was focusing attention on taking pictures of the suspect’s rolled over car and several police cruisers.
ABC6 will update this story as we get more information.
