A 32-year-old man involved in a fatal hit-and-run in Tacoma, Washington, was located and arrested thanks to the efforts of a witness who followed his vehicle and reported the license plate to authorities.
Tacoma Police received a 911 call at about 5:45 a.m. on November 28, alerting them to a motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian that occurred on East 44th and Portland Avenue.
Patrol officers arrived on the scene shortly after. They were soon joined by the Tacoma Police Department's Collision Investigation Team, along with crime scene technicians.
The pedestrian, who was identified as an 18-year-old man, succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the collision.
With the help of the witness who followed the suspect's vehicle, officers were able to contact the 32-year-old driver and he was arrested without incident. He has since been charged with vehicular homicide, felony hit and run and other related charges.
He was booked into the Pierce County jail. An investigation into the collision is ongoing.
In a statement posted to Twitter, the Tacoma Police Department praised the efforts of the eyewitness in helping them track down the hit-and-run suspect.
"Thank you to the citizen who followed the suspect vehicle in a fatality hit-and-run that occurred at 5:45 a.m. in the 4400 blk of Portland Ave. this morning," they said. "Officers were able to arrest the 32 yr old male suspect driver for Vehicular Homicide and Felony Hit and Run."
Newsweek has contacted the Tacoma Police Department for comment.
According to research published by the American Automobile Association's Foundation for Traffic Safety in 2018, more than one hit-and-run crash occurs every minute on U.S. roads, with nearly 65 percent of people killed in hit-and-run crashes being either pedestrians or cyclists.
The incident comes just days after a 35-year-old librarian was fatally shot after returning home from a hit and run crash in Orange City, Florida.
Sara Nicole Morales traveled to her home after allegedly intentionally hitting Andrew Derr, a 40-year-old motorcyclist, with her car before fleeing the scene. Derr and several other witnesses gave chase, culminating in a stand-off. Morales was shot and killed after pointing a firearm at Derr outside her house.
In Houston, Texas, meanwhile, a man was struck and killed by a driver after allegedly stealing beer from a nearby convenience store. Police are still searching for the motorist responsible.
Last month in Detroit, a woman turned herself into the authorities following a hit-and-run collision that killed two moms. Erica Yancey, a 38-year-old mother of four, and her sister-in-law Brittany Jones, a mother of three in her 20s, were struck and killed by a dark colored Kia Soul while leaving the Kings & Queens Banquet Hall on the 15000 block of Schaefer in Detroit.
They both died as a result of their injuries. A 30-year-old woman was arrested after she surrendered to police.
