JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department announcing the loss of one of their own, making him the third employee to die in the line of duty this year.
In a statement released Thursday morning JFRD said, “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a JFRD firefighter who was working at the scene of a motor vehicle accident involving a difficult and prolonged extrication this morning at 1am. Lifesaving efforts by JFRD personnel and UF Health hospital staff were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead at 2:12am.
Please respect the privacy of his family during this extremely difficult time. Further details will follow after all family members have been notified.”
A spokesperson with JFRD said a news conference is scheduled later in the day.
Two other employees of JFRD have died this year. Action News Jax reported in June when Captain Tom Barber died after 21 years with the department. In August, the department announced the death Lt. Mario J. Moya, who died from COVID-19.
