BAY CITY, MI -- The madness of high school hoops season has arrived.
MLive sets the stage for the 2021-22 campaign by offering a look at the boys basketball scene in the Bay City area, with a glance at the top seniors, top juniors and top games to watch.
Here we offer a glance at 12 juniors to keep an eye on from the 26-team MLive Bay City coverage area, as nominated by area coaches.
Cameron Washington of the Bay City Central boys basketball team.
Cameron Washington, Bay City Central
The returning MLive Bay City Dream Teamer can stop and pop like nobody’s business, and his range gets deeper by the game. The 6-2 guard will command plenty of defensive attention after averaging 15.9 points and knocking down 36 3-pointers as a sophomore.
Hudson Hodgins of the Ogemaw Heights boys basketball team.
Hudson Hodgins, Ogemaw Heights
Buckle up and be prepared for a high-flying season from this third-year varsity sensation. He shot 44.5 percent from 3-point land while averaging 19.2 points and 6.9 rebounds per game.
L.J. McCullough of the Bay City Central boys basketball team.
L.J. McCullough, Bay City Central
Look for this second-year varsity performer to make his team go this season. The 6-3 guard can run the point, fire from range or drive, draw and deliver. He averaged 7.5 points and 6.0 rebounds a year ago in what was just a glimpse of things to come.
Michael Fernald of the Cass City boys basketball team.
Michael Fernald, Cass City
An emerging talent who is primed to take it up a notch, he was tough a year ago while averaging 9.0 points and 7.0 rebounds. He can hit from outside and score off the dribble.
Hunter Krohn, Laker
The big man provides a big presence in the paint, but he runs the floor well and has a shooter’s touch, making him tough to defend. The second-team all-Greater Thumb West performer is tough in the paint defensively as well.
Brady Rogers of the John Glenn boys basketball team.
Brady Rogers, John Glenn
Thrown into the varsity fire as a sophomore, the Bobcats couldn’t take him off the court. He emerged as a valuable performer, averaging 7.0 points and 3.0 assists. Expect his offense to take off the second time around.
Carmello Hurston of the Bay City Central boys basketball team.
Carmello Hurston, Bay City Central
Look for the high-spirited guard to infuse his energy into the Wolves this winter. The 5-10 playmaker is a go-getter who gets it done on both ends of the court. He averaged 7.3 points and 2.0 rebounds in a sophomore year that was hampered by injury.
Cody Meigs, Houghton Lake
When the ball is in his hands, good things happen for Houghton Lake. The playmaker returns after averaging 10.0 points as a junior. He runs the point but can light it up with his shooting as well.
Camron Shooltz of the Bay City Western boys basketball team.
Cam Shooltz, Bay City Western
The Warriors have a rookie of the year candidate in Shooltz. He’s a court-smart point guard who can run the offense with precision and get down and dirty on the defensive end.
Conner Kirby of the Harrison football and basketball teams for 2021-22.
Conner Kirby, Harrison
The versatile performer can play any position on the floor other than center with his strong, aggressive and smart style. Tough off the drive, he can knock down the outside shot as needed.

This standout out athlete – now sprouted up to 6-foot-3 – brings plenty to the table in his second varsity campaign. A combo player, he averaged 6.1 points and 4.0 rebounds a year ago. Look for him to take it to another level this season while also setting the tone on defense.
Dirk Rierson, Unionville-Sebewaing
The Patriots are banking on a strong season from this multi-sport athlete. He steps in at the point where his heady play and team-oriented mentality makes him a true floor general.
