20 seniors to watch on the Bay City area boys basketball scene for 2021-22 - MLive.com

BAY CITY, MI -- The madness of high school hoops season has arrived.

MLive sets the stage for the 2021-22 campaign by offering a look at the boys basketball scene in the Bay City area, with a glance at the top seniors, top juniors and top games to watch.

We start with a glance at 20 seniors to keep an eye on from the 26-team MLive Bay City coverage area, as nominated by area coaches.

DaMarquss Palmreuter

DaMarquss Palmreuter of the Reese boys basketball team.

DaMarquss Palmreuter, Reese

The explosive guard plays at a different pace than most are accustomed to, making him a dynamic player on both ends of the court. The two-time MLive Bay City Dream Teamer led Reese to the regional final last season while averaging 16.8 points per game.

Cole Prout

A go-to player at crunch time, he couldn’t be stopped in the post with the game on the line. He delivered 13.8 points and 8.6 rebounds per game, showing that the Division I baseball recruit can hoop as well.

Jake Rau

Jake Rau, Reese

A big man who can shoot the 16-footer with the best of them, he is a powerful weapon for the powerful Rockets. He averaged 13.1 points and 6.9 rebounds per game while earning first-team all-Greater Thumb West and second-team MLive Bay City Dream Team.

Chase Raymond

With an ideal combination of size and athleticism – and the competitive spark to match – Raymond is a playmaker in three sports for the Panthers. He was good for 15.2 points and 8.3 boards per game a year ago.

Luke Gillis

Luke Gillis, Bay City Western

Few can heat up in a hurry like the Western sharpshooter. He scores his points from long range and in bunches, averaging 14.5 points and 4.1 rebounds a year ago.

Levi Foco

A high-energy player who elevates everybody around him, he is cut from the Reese basketball mold. He averaged 14.9 points and 4.0 rebounds while earning all-Greater Thumb West first-team honors.

Parker Nelson

Parker Nelson, Au Gres

The 6-foot-4 forward is a double-double machine for the Wolverines. He poured in 17.4 points and grabbed 11.6 rebounds per game a year ago while also tallying 3.5 blocks. Expect big numbers from the big man as a senior.

Oscoda basketball

A role player who averaged 10.5 points while knocking down 42.2 percent from 3-point range a year ago, he elevates to go-to status as a senior. The 6-2 guard is primed for a huge campaign.

Joel Ewald

A gritty gamer who embodied his team’s never-say-die mentality last season, he’s poised for a monstrous finale. A lights-out shooter from the free-throw line and 3-point line, he averaged 13.5 points a year ago.

Jack Mularz

Jack Mularz, Essexville Garber

The three-year varsity starter is a true floor general. He averaged 8.3 points and 4.5 assists a year ago, but his true value is in his relentless play that sets the tone for the Dukes.

Tanner TerBush

Tanner TerBush, Reese

With a high-revving motor, he’s the engine that makes the Rockets go. The senior point guard averaged 6.0 points and 6.6 assists a year ago for the regional finalists and he sets the tone on the defensive end as well.

Zack Kontes

Zack Kontes, Bay City All Saints

A four-year varsity performer, he becomes the chief scoring threat for the Cougars as a senior. A sharp-shooting guard, he made 44 3-pointers a year ago and has 95 in his career. He averaged 13.6 points per game as a junior while earning first-team all-NCTL.

Nick Stephens

Already the school’s all-time leading scorer, he begins a senior year of promise. A strong all-around athlete who is on pace to earn 14 varsity letters, he averaged 11.0 points, 8.7 rebounds and 6.8 assists a year ago.

Owen Bacigalupo

Owen Bacigalupo, Bay City Western

The senior gives the Warriors a big body in the post. He showed the willingness to battle on the boards a year ago when he averaged 4.4 rebounds per game and will be counted on as a bigger scorer as a senior.

Logan Ashcroft

Logan Ashcroft, Harrison

A tough-nosed competitor, he sets a rugged tone for the Hornets. The senior guard is a strong ballhandler who knows how to put the ball in the bucket. He averaged 11.0 points and 4.0 assists last season while earning honorable mention all-Jack Pine Conference.

Dylan Wehner

A player with the potential to be one of the area’s breakout performers, he takes on a larger role for the Lakers as a senior. Standing 6-foot-5 with the athleticism to match, he led the team in blocked shots and rebounds a year ago.

D.J. LaBean

D.J. LaBean of the Pinconning boys basketball team.

D.J. LaBean Pinconning

The third-year varsity performer brings experience and a willingness to battle to the court. A shooting guard, he averaged 10.0 points per game last year and connected on 70 percent from the free-throw line. He contributes on the boards with a knack for getting to the basketball.

Evan Saunders

A high-energy player with explosive skills, he sets the tone for the Wolverines on defense. He can hit from the inside or take it to the hoop on the offensive end. He averaged 12.8 points per game as a junior.

Adam Maust

Adam Maust of Unionville-Sebewaing Area for 2021-22.

Adam Maust, Unionville-Sebewaing

The returning varsity performer and three-sport standout brings leadership skills to the court. The rugged power forward isn’t afraid to bang bodies or fight for his points. His court smarts and team-first attitude make him the heart of the Patriots.

Denver Peters, Gladwin

During a chaotic junior season, Peters flew under the radar. But don’t expect that to be the case this season as the 6-foot-4 post player is expected to be a huge presence. He averaged 3.0 points and 3.0 rebounds in limited action a year ago.
