Editorial: Baker’s move sets scene for pol free-for-all - Boston Herald

Was it something we said?

Gov. Charlie Baker’s decision not to seek a third term means he won’t have to dodge brickbats after 2022. There were bouquets as well — the popular Baker’s made some sharp moves in his tenure — but finding-fault lines have steadily opened up, especially during the pandemic.

In the message Baker and Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito gave to supporters on Wednesday, he highlighted the “unanticipated crises” that steered his tenure as governor — from the continuous blizzards that crippled the T during their first 60 days in office to the Merrimack Valley natural gas explosions to the coronavirus pandemic.

That’s got to wear a person down, or at least make them rethink their five-year plan.

But it’s part of the job. The someone-is-always-unhappy-with-you job. A  job that a lot of people seem to want.

Former State Rep. Geoff Diehl is on board, he’s got the hats and T-shirts on his website and an endorsement from Donald Trump.

Sources close to former GOP state Rep. Shaunna O’Connell, now mayor of Taunton, tell the Herald she is “seriously considering” a run for governor.

Former Boston mayor, now Labor Secretary Marty Walsh could also be in the mix — making for one wild wild card pick.

And then there’s Attorney General Maura Healey, who forked over some $21,000 in April for polling and waded into a cranberry bog last month — as one does — all while remaining coy about a run for governor.

Three other Democrats have already held up their hands: Harvard professor Danielle Allen, former state Sen. Ben Downing and state Sen. Sonia Chang-Diaz.

There will no doubt be others entering and leaving the fray over the coming year.

But campaigns are different these days — one doesn’t only face political rivals, but a Greek chorus of special interest groups trying to wield influence and whip up voters.

On the Republican side, Glenn Youngkin’s win in Virginia cast some doubt on Trump’s influence — but how many Republicans are willing to test the fence again?

The real sport will be in watching Democratic candidates out-progressive each other, and see if anyone dares go it alone as a moderate. That’s a lonely path, and a difficult one. Just ask Annissa Essaibi George.

They’re already off to the races:

“The people of Massachusetts are ready for a new chapter with new leadership. For far too long, people in power have asked working families to wait for change — despite a growing affordable housing crisis, inaccessible and expensive child and health care, the existential threat of climate change and long-standing racial injustice. In 2022, our next governor must be someone willing to take on challenges even when they’re hard — who recognizes the urgency of this moment, who tackles these issues with the courage to solve them, and who has a record of winning bold, systemic change on Beacon Hill. I’m proud to be building a grassroots movement across age, class and faith to put power back in the hands of the people and to elect a governor who’s not afraid to fight for our values,” Chang-Diaz told the Herald.

There will be a lot more of that next year — from candidates, climate change activists, housing advocates, criminal reform proponents and other progressive voices who see the opportunity to shape the corner office.

And we can expect to hear from D.C. pols as well — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez blasted Democrats for not asking her to campaign for Terry McAuliffe in Virginia.

Let the games begin.
