Many are aware of how Larry David’s long-running Curb Your Enthusiasm is shot: with cleverly outlined plot beats teased out over a season, but its individual scenes open for free-wheeling improvisation by its next-level brilliant performers. A new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, however, shows how the production was overly prepared while shooting the 11th season.
Explaining how the team goes into each season thinking it could be the last (and, with some of the long gaps over the show’s 22 years, you can see why) producer Jeff Schaffer made sure they had something in the can if it was truly going to be the end. In short: they killed Larry David.
“If this is how we go, this is how we go!” Schaffer told the crew before shooting the scene of David’s demise.
The moment—which, if we’re lucky, will get worked into a dream sequence or something some day—involved David’s ironic drowning in an unfenced swimming pool. The arc of the show’s 11th season, currently up for four Emmys, began with a thief drowning in Larry’s pool because it didn’t have a proper fence.
The would-be burglar’s brother (Marques Ray) then blackmails David, citing his not-up-to-code pool, and demands he cast his profoundly untalented daughter (Keyla Monterroso Mejia) in his new show. While this is going on, David romances a local councilwoman, played by Tracy Ullman, in the hopes of reversing the local measure. Naturally, all the plans go horribly awry.
As did the production’s plan to kill off Larry David, it seems. The HBO series was confirmed for a 12th season in April. Whether or not each season is the last seems to be at the whim of its creator, and just how much of an act the Larry David we see on screen is compared to real life is a question historians will ponder for decades to come. But as JB Smoove told Variety at the time, “The more the world changes, the more toys [Larry] has to play with. He’s excited right now — his energy is great.”
