A Sausalito houseboat sets the scene for thriller filmed in Bay Area - SFGATE

Actress Jennifer Garner’s Instagram is pretty predictable. There are videos filmed in what is presumably her home kitchen, which she titles “pretend cooking show.” She shares uplifting viral content and sprinkles in some hair and skin care sponcon. But avid local fans may have spotted an anomaly in mid-August last year: a selfie of Garner in front of the Golden Gate Bridge. The folks at the Presidio certainly took note, posting in reply, “We hope you enjoyed Presidio Tunnel Tops JG!”

Meeting Jennifer Garner

It’s fitting for an actress whose girl-next-door reputation more or less keeps her out of the spotlight (that is, unless there’s news related to her ex Ben Affleck). But as the show neared its debut — the first episode is out Friday — Garner’s Instagram went into promo mode with posts gushing over her co-stars’ performances and expressing admiration for the novel that served as source material.

This, of course, is also “to type,” but the actress’s charm is the real deal, according to locals who met her during filming. Megan Dixon, whose houseboat at Waldo Point Harbor’s Liberty Dock was used as a location, told SFGATE that Garner is down-to-earth, sweet, maybe even a little bit shy. “She seems exactly like the person she comes across as,” she added, praising the actress as an activist and “amazing human being.”

Garner had “devoured” the eponymous book, a Reese’s Book Club pick, according to Vanity Fair. After Julia Roberts dropped out of the project, Garner embarked on a “letter-writing campaign” to play the thriller’s main character, artist Hannah Hall.

Viewers looking to see a lot of Garner’s co-star, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, who rose to sex symbol status with his lengthy turn as Jaime Lannister on HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” might also be disappointed. Coster-Waldau’s character, tech startup leader Owen Michaels, goes missing early in the series when the company he works for implodes in an initial public offering scandal.

The thriller centers on Hannah (Garner), who is Owen’s second wife, and his petulant teenage daughter, Bailey (Angourie Rice), as they attempt to unpack his disappearance — and the cryptic note he left behind with a duffel bag of money. Also mixed up in the mystery are some federal agents, Hannah’s lawyer ex-husband and two local journalist pals, one of whom is played by SF native Aisha Tyler. (In the first episode, her character strolls an empty Oracle Park referencing interviews with “Gold Glove-winning shortstops” in a clear nod to Giants star Brandon Crawford.)

Aisha Tyler plays Hannah Hall’s friend Jules, a reporter who helps Hannah look into the mystery of her husband’s death, in “The Last Thing He Told Me.”

The thriller is well paced and ripe for binge-watching, though Apple TV+ plans to launch the episodes of “The Last Thing He Told Me” weekly, starting with two episodes on Friday.

Meanwhile, back on the houseboat

In the novel version of “The Last Thing He Told Me,” author Laura Dave (who also co-wrote the series with her screenwriter husband, Josh Singer, who penned the Oscar-winning film “Spotlight”) sets Hannah and Owen’s houseboat on Issaquah Dock. But when it came time to film the series, Dixon was the one to get a knock on her door.

On the other side was a location scout, who asked if he could take a look around. Dixon remembers being a bit exasperated at the time. Her houseboat was being painted, and she had just changed jobs. She had turned a room in the boat into an office for her new gig, and movers were there with giant furniture from the SF office she had just vacated. She had also emptied her deck of the patio chairs for the exterior paint job.

“There were just piles of Adirondack chairs and stuff packed in the middle of my living room,” Dixon said.

The scout texted pictures to his production colleagues and asked if he could invite them over, Dixon recounted. She told him they were welcome but didn’t expect anything to come of it because she couldn’t imagine “why anyone would want to shoot in this absolute hellhole of a home right now.”

Several months later, she was moving into a nearby hotel room paid for by the production, and the crew had set up shop in her houseboat.

Living on the dock of the bay

It’s fun to get a window into the waterfront lifestyle via the show. Dixon notes that Liberty Dock, unlike other nearby docks, is not gated. As a result, visitors frequently stroll the dock to get a taste of what it’s like to live on a houseboat. “People are just curious about it,” she said.

Even with the openness of her neighbors, Dixon thought it was crucial to have their blessing. Everyone was supportive of the shoot, she said. People stood out on the dock often during filming — at times maybe a bit too often, in hopes perhaps of chatting up the stars. The cast and crew took it in stride, she said.

At Dixon’s request, the production company paid the community funds for hosting the shoot; the money was used for dock beautification and to throw a wrap party at the end of filming.

“Everyone ended up feeling like it was really a community bonding experience,” Dixon said.

So much so that they’re planning a watch party Friday night, maybe with a drinking game for each time the dock shows up on screen.

Unfortunately, it will likely be too cold and windy for a “raft up,” the summer parties they throw to watch movies on one neighbor’s outdoor screen from kayaks and paddleboards. This time, they’ll probably convene in Dixon’s houseboat since it’s the biggest. “We’ll try not to sink it,” she said.

And those of us who follow Garner on Instagram can pretend to be surprised when there are sneaky posts of her taking shots on a houseboat that looks suspiciously like the one in the series.
