Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves surprised critics and fans with how funny the film is, with Regé-Jean Page's overly serious Xenk providing a lot of the laughs through his contrast with the more laid-back band of protagonists.
When it came to Xenk's exit, directors John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein felt it was appropriate to make his send-off a comedic spin on 'the hero's departure' scenes. In an interview with Mashable, they revealed how they tried multiple different versions of the scene, before letting Bridgerton alum Page do some improv, and that's what ended up on screen.

"[Xenk's walk] was us commenting on the trope of the weary hero walking into the sunset and pulling the rug out from the expectation of that trope," Daley said.
Goldstein added that: "We had a lot of alt jokes there with [Chris Pine's] Edgin saying, 'Where's he even going? I don't think there's anything down that way.'"
What ended up being that way was a giant rock, and the directors let Page decide how he wanted to handle it — which ended up with him walking right over it, without breaking his stride.
Daley said: "That moment was one of the few things that we found on the day. We had Regé walking in a straight line away from the scene, and we decided to just keep the cameras rolling and see what he'd do... We had no idea how Regé would handle [the rock].

"And the fact that he hopped over it was so hilarious to us that we knew we had to include it."
"He would just go until we'd call 'cut,' so we were like, 'Don't call cut. Let's just see what happens," Goldstein added.
