Police investigating possible violent crime at house in west-central Topeka - WIBW

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Police were investigating what they said was a possible violent crime on Friday at a house in west-central Topeka.

The home was located at 1512 S.W. 24th, about a half-block west of S.W. Washburn Avenue.

Officers at the scene told 13 NEWS around 9:30 a.m. Friday that they were serving a search warrant in connection with an incident that occurred Thursday night.

Police responded around 3 a.m. Friday to the house in the 1500 block of S.W. 24th to continue their investigation.

Yellow crime-scene tape was placed around the single-story, beige-colored house as police investigated the scene.

Several police units and the department’s Crime Scene Investigation Unit van remained at the scene past 12:30 p.m. Friday.

Around 12:05 p.m. on Friday, about five additional Topeka police officers arrived on the scene and put on protective blue gloves and shoe coverings before they entered the house.

Officers and crime scene investigators also could be seen entering and leaving the residence earlier on Friday morning.

Additionally, police officers were seen on the back -- or north -- side of the residence.

An orange evidence marker could be seen just inside the home’s front door, which remained open during the morning and into the afternoon on Friday.

The location of the crime scene was about three blocks north of the Washburn University campus.

It was approximately nine blocks south and west of where a shooting occurred Wednesday morning that claimed a man’s life.

The capital city has recorded 16 homicides so far in 2023, compared to three at the same time in 2022.

Additional information on the incident in the 1500 block of S.W. 24th wasn’t available early Friday afternoon.

Police said further details were expected to be released later on Friday.
