Jaya Bachchan has been on a hiatus from the movies for the past few years but the veteran actor is among the most promising talents in the annals of Hindi cinema after her debut in 1971’s Guddi. Jaya was a star from her early days but she had a few reservations when it came to exposing on screen. Once, when Jaya had to be a part of a rape scene , she put her foot down as the director demanded that her clothes be torn.
In a chat with Rajya Sabha TV, Jaya recalled that while shooting for BR Ishara’s 1972 film Ek Nazar, where she co-starred with Amitabh Bachchan, her character was supposed to be raped by another character, played by Sudhir. Jaya recalled, “I was told that your clothes will be torn, I said ‘no, I will not allow it’. There was a huge argument that happened with Babu da (BR Ishara) and he threatened that he will scrap the film, I said ‘okay, do it’. The producer threatened that he will go to the artists’ association and I said that do whatever you want.”
Jaya stood her ground and said that she might lose in front of the association and she added, “If I am required to do it forcefully, then you watch. I will act so badly that it will destroy your film.” Jaya said that the shoot was cancelled and was stalled for the next two days. At this point, Amitabh stepped in and spoke to her. “Amit ji told me that you are here to work and if this is your role and this is how it is written then you will have to do it. How can you refuse? I said, ‘I will not tear my clothes. I won’t allow anyone to show me on screen with my clothes torn’,” she shared.
A compromise was reached in the end where the director asked Jaya to act naturally. “Then it was decided, Babu da said we’ll do it naturally and you react and we will figure it out, we’ll see what is to be done later. The poor villain, who was going to rape me, I hit him so much during the scene. He said ‘I don’t want to rape her’,” Jaya laughed as she recalled the anecdote.
The Mili actor said that she always had an inhibition about exposing her body on screen and wondered how it came about. “I always had this inhibition that I will never expose my body. Maybe because I was from a small town or I grew up in a middle-class family. I don’t know what it was but I couldn’t,” she said.
