ATLANTA ACTIVE SHOOTER: Former Coast Guardsman wanted after 1 killed, 4 injured in Midtown shooting - WSB Atlanta

ATLANTA — Atlanta police said at least one person is dead and at least four people have been injured in an active shooter situation on West Peachtree Street Wednesday afternoon.

Three of the victims have critical injuries. It’s unclear if all four people who were injured sustained gunshot wounds.

The shooter is still on the loose. He’s been identified by police as Deion Patterson, 24.

Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum confirmed that all five victims are women aged 25, 39, 39, 56 and 71. One of the 39-year-old women died from her injuries. None of them have been identified.

We have multiple reporters on the scene with LIVE wall-to-wall coverage as this story develops, on Channel 2 Action News throughout the evening.

Police said no additional shots have been fired since the incident unfolded, but officers are still actively searching for the victim and any other victims.

They say Patterson carjacked a vehicle a short distance away and used it to leave the scene as police arrived. That vehicle has since been recovered.

Atlanta police have released several photos of the alleged shooter pointing to what appears to be a handgun inside a set of glass doors. He’s wearing a gray or black hoodie and carrying a bag.

Police said they believe Patterson is armed and dangerous.

Channel 2 Action News confirmed that Patterson joined the U.S. Coast Guard in July 2018 and served as an Electrician’s Mate Second Class. He was discharged from active duty in January 2023.

Channel 2′s Michael Seiden was at the scene, where he saw what looked like hundreds of heavily-armed officers outside 1100 West Peachtree Street Northwest, which is a Northside Hospital facility.

Multiple agencies including Atlanta police, Atlanta fire, MARTA police, Georgia Tech police and the Georgia State Patrol responded to the situation.

A senior member of the Channel 2 Action News team was in the area and saw several people being taken out of the building on stretchers to waiting ambulances.

Channel 2′s Mark Winne saw several ambulances speed away from the scene. Winne said this is the largest police scene he’s ever seen.

Police released the shelter-in-place orders in the area just before 3 p.m. but they are asking everyone to remain out of the area.

Police said that a driver was carjacked at the intersection of 14th and Williams Streets not long after the shooting. The vehicle was later located by Cobb County police. Police have not given a description of the car.

Video circulated on social media of a man in similar clothing on top of the High Museum, but police said that person is a worker and was not involved in the shooting.

Atlanta Public Schools initially held students at several schools near the shooting but have since said police have cleared them to release students. APS said there will be officers stationed at all the schools that were held and transportation may be delayed.

Crime Stoppers is offering a $10,000 reward for information that leads to Patterson’s arrest. Information can be submitted anonymously to the Crime Stoppers Atlanta tip line at 404-577-TIPS (8477) or online at www.StopCrimeAtl.org.

This is the second mass shooting in Midtown in less than a year. Two people were killed in August of 2022 when a woman opened fire in a condo building on West Peachtree. That shooting appeared to be motivated by a dispute with the condo’s board.
