The Marvelous Mrs Maisel series finale spoilers follow.
The Marvelous Mrs Maisel star Rachel Brosnahan has broken down the show's finale flashforward scene, and what exactly happened to Joel (Michael Zegen).
The show's last-ever episode premiered today (May 26), and ended with Midge (Brosnahan) finally becoming a huge star after getting a big break on The Gordon Ford Show.
At the very end, it flashes forward to 2005 as the comedian now lives in a huge New York apartment thanks to her success, and at one point looks at a wedding photo of her ex-husband Joel fondly.

However, Brosnahan appeared to confirm that Joel is now dead, telling Entertainment Weekly: "Well, I know Joel's dead because I asked [creator] Amy [Sherman-Palladino]. [Laughs]
"I think everyone's dead at that point, except for Midge and Susie. Those two broads are like cockroaches. They're never gonna die. They get stepped on over and over and over again, and they got a thick exo-skeleton."
Speaking further about the final scene, as Midge speaks to Susie (Alex Borstein) halfway around the world, Brosnahan was asked whether we should be celebrating or taking it as a cautionary tale.
"I think it just is. What it is is Midge's journey and Midge's life," she said. "It's been full of contradictions and big dreams and high highs and low lows.

"Amy said to me during the first season, and it's something that I've held near, because I find it both really beautiful and also deeply sad — I asked Amy during our first season what was going to happen to Midge and Joel, and if they would ever get back together again.
"She told me that they would never get back together again forever, because they would never be able to be on the same page at the same time again.
"But that Midge, when she lived in her Park Avenue penthouse with 20 poodles, the poodles were mysteriously absent from the finale, but that Midge would always look back on the day before Joel left her as the happiest day of her life."
The Marvelous Mrs Maisel season 5 is streaming now on Prime Video.
