GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - Firefighters are still working to ensure a fire at the vegetable processing plant in Grand Island is completely out.
According to Grand Island Fire Chief Cory Schmidt, crews were called out to McCain Foods around 5:15 p.m. after a staff member reported the A/C unit on the roof was on fire.
Firefighters scaled the building and quickly extinguished the fire on the roof but it had already extended inside the building. Chief Schmidt said the structure of the roof is making it difficult to give the all-clear since it has several layers, and the fire has worked its way into them.
He said the extreme heat is also posing a challenge for the more than 20 personnel on the scene as they are frequently rotating crews in and out.
Time is of the essence according to the chief, as the power has been shut off to the building until the fire is stopped. This leaves many food items in the refrigerators at risk.
Fortunately, no injuries have been reported by the fire crews, but one staff member of McCain did receive treatment for heat-related issues on the scene.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the State Fire Marshal.
