While Barbie may not feature a post-credits scene, that wasn't always the case.
Per an Instagram post by Tom Clark, an actor who performed in the film, narrator Helen Mirren was intended to physically appear after the credits rolled in a scene wherein she walked in on Midge, Barbie's pregnant friend, giving birth. The moment in question is captured with a variety of behind-the-scenes photos that see Mirren looking directly at the camera in a concerned fashion while Midge is surrounded by two Barbies and a Ken as she's in labor. It's currently unknown why the moment was cut from the movie.
Mirren's discovery of Midge giving birth wasn't the only major scene of hers that was cut from Barbie. Director and co-writer Greta Gerwig revealed that the movie was originally meant to begin with the acclaimed actor dropping an F-Bomb, cursing out Nobel Prize winner Marie Curie. "Suffice to say, there was a sort of extended joke with Marie Curie, which didn't end up being part of (the final cut)," Gerwig said. "But yes, there was a page-one f-bomb that sort of set the tone for the whole thing. What the line was, it was actually Helen Mirren saying to Marie Curie, 'Pipe the f-ck down, Marie Curie!' That was like my favorite (line)." The audio itself was captured but never made it into the final cut.
Barbie Gets Real
Surging to the top of the 2023 box office, just behind Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Barbie has been an unmitigated success for Gerwig and Warner Bros. Discovery, earning universal acclaim from critics and fans for its hilarious script and incisive commentary on society. The movie stars Margot Robbie as a stereotypical Barbie who begins to question her reality, venturing out of her comfort zone to the real world with her companion Ken, played by Ryan Gosling.
Mattel, the company behind the Barbie brand, has suggested that the movie's success could lead to sequels and spinoffs. While CEO Ynon Kreiz insisted that nothing was officially being announced, they acknowledged that the franchise does have a potential cinematic future. "We expect the brand to continue to grow. We expect to have more opportunities in content, and this is not just film, this is television and other areas," Kreiz said.
Barbie is now playing in theaters worldwide.
