Two off-duty Lincoln police officers were injured while trying to help off-duty at a crash scene. The incident happened Wednesday night near S 158th Street and Saltillo Road. Officers Kate Schwenke and Brent Lovett had to be rushed to the hospital after a passing vehicle hit them on the side of the road. According to the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office, the initial crash occurred around 7:20 p.m.Investigators said a silver Toyota Avalon was traveling eastbound on Saltillo Road and failed to stop for a stop sign at S 158th Street, hitting a white GMC Sierra traveling northbound through the intersection.The Toyota was disabled and came to rest partially in the northbound lanes of 158th Street, facing south without functional headlights, according to authorities.Two motorists who were not involved stopped to assist the driver of the Toyota, the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office said.A red Chevrolet Bolt traveling northbound then hit the Toyota, which was pushed into the driver and the two motorists who assisted, authorities said.The driver of the Toyota was taken to a local hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, the Lancaster County Sheriff's Office said.Schwenke suffered an ankle injury and was released, but Lovett remains hospitalized with serious injuries to his head and abdomen. Both have nearly eight years of experience with the Lincoln Police Department."The heroic actions of Officers Lovett and Schwenke highlight their dedication to their profession and the people of this community, one they have sworn to protect.
