Jennifer Aniston probably didn’t realize she was going to create an internet firestorm when she revealed in a Variety interview that she and Jon Hamm didn’t need an intimacy coordinator during their hot sex scene on The Morning Show. The 54-year-old actress said it was because she’s from “the olden days” when a crew position like that didn’t exist, but X, former Twitter, users had something to say about her comments.

One account leaned in right away into the plot line of the Apple TV+ series and how Aniston is missing the point right away. They wrote, “The irony of playing the role a talk show host who ignored her co hosts sexually predatory behavior not getting why an intimacy coordinator should be encouraged by and how it empowers actors without her clout.”

Another user added, “Embrace change; it’s the heartbeat of growth.” And another account made a great point, noting, “I feel like everyone is missing that intimacy coordinators aren’t just there for the comfort of the actors. It’s everyone on set. I’m glad she was comfortable without an intimacy coordinator but there are other people involved who should also be comfortable in their workplace.”

In 2023, it’s very common for actors to utilize the services of an intimacy coordinator when they are shooting sex scenes. They are there to not only make everyone feel comfortable in what is usually a very awkward scene to film, but the actors have to consent to every move made on-camera. It’s a safe space to voice their concerns and choreograph where hands — and other body parts — are going while they film. Aniston praised director Mimi Leder for making her feel ” protected” on set and Hamm for being “such a gentleman,” but that isn’t always the case, especially for actors who don’t have the A-list power Aniston does.

Just because Aniston and Hamm are “seasoned” actors, it’s also important for them to set a standard as veteran performers. There are young artists coming up behind them who deserve those safety measures that the SAG-AFTRA union fought for. So, even if they didn’t feel like they needed an intimacy coordinator for their particular scene, just having one on set sends a strong message to the entire Morning Show cast and crew.
