Percy Jackson's Added Poseidon Scene Is Needed (Especially After The Show's Medusa Change) - Screen Rant

Summary

  • Percy Jackson & the Olympians is adding a Poseidon scene to provide insight into his relationship with Sally, something that the books don't delve into deeply.
  • The inclusion of the Poseidon and Sally scene will shed light on Percy's father and potentially highlight the positive qualities of the gods, who are currently portrayed negatively.
  • After the changes made to the Medusa storyline, a Poseidon and Sally scene is needed to offer a different perspective on Poseidon and allow viewers to form their own opinions.

Percy Jackson & the Olympians is exploring storylines and characters from Rick Riordan's best-selling books in more depth, and the Disney+ show is adding a much-needed Poseidon scene, which comes as a relief after its recent Medusa changes. Although Disney's Percy Jackson show is a far more faithful adaptation of Riordan's story than the movies, its TV format and modern perspective allow it to improve upon certain aspects of the source material. In some cases, this means Percy Jackson fixes problematic storylines. In others, it results in the TV show giving further context about the situations that unfold.

One way Percy Jackson & the Olympians is doing the latter is by inputting a Poseidon and Sally Jackson scene that's not in the books. Riordan told Variety that this moment will appear in episode 7, serving as "a third act to that subplot of Medusa and Poseidon and Sally." While not much is known about this TV-only flashback, its inclusion is for the best. After all, neither the show nor the source material has painted a generous picture of Poseidon thus far.

The Percy Jackson Books Don't Go Into Poseidon & Sally's Relationship Enough

A Flashback Scene Will Offer More Insight

Virginia Kull as Sally Jackson in Percy Jackson & the Olympians

While fans of Riordan's story won't like every book change Percy Jackson & the Olympians makes, they should appreciate the show's added Poseidon scene. After all, the books don't go into the relationship between Percy's mom and the Olympian god all that much. This isn't necessarily strange — in Greek mythology, the gods often have brief relationships that produce children — but Sally makes it sound like she's quite fond of Percy's father. She doesn't frame their relationship or the outcome negatively, something Percy tells Medusa in Percy Jackson & the Olympians episode 3.

That gives readers and viewers an idea of Poseidon and Sally's relationship, but the Percy Jackson books rarely go deeper than that. There's little insight into what makes Sally enter a relationship with Poseidon in the first place, and she doesn't go into her thoughts about him very deeply. In general, Disney's Percy Jackson adaptation does a better job characterizing Sally, and this scene will continue that. However, it will also offer some much-needed characterization for Poseidon, who doesn't look great even after saving Percy at the end of episode 4.

The Disney Show's Added Poseidon Scene Can Shed Light On Percy's Father

Percy Jackson & The Olympians Currently Portrays Him Negatively

Percy Jackson is standing in the water looking up with Poseidon's trident above him. Annabeth watches from the shoreline in Percy Jackson and the Olympians.

Percy Jackson raises many questions about Sally's relationship with Poseidon, but it also leaves a lot unanswered when it comes to Percy's dad. Camp Half-Blood drives home the fact that the gods act in mysterious ways, but Percy's difficulty understanding their behavior is intentional. Through his comments, the Disney series masterfully continues the books' criticisms of the gods' negligence when it comes to their kids. Even after episode 4's ending, Poseidon remains an elusive character — and one whose actions don't appear all that benevolent.

The flashback scene between Poseidon and Sally may highlight the gods' positive qualities, as there's clearly a reason Percy's mother falls for him. This is needed, as the Olympians are coming off nearly as bad as the villains at this point in the show. And given what Medusa tells Percy and Annabeth about their parents, viewers are already poised to align themselves against the god of the sea. Hopefully, his flashback with Sally will make it easier to root for him.

A Poseidon & Sally Scene Is Needed After Percy Jackson's Medusa Change

Medusa's Story Doesn't Put Poseidon In A Positive Light

If Poseidon was simply an absent father, it might be easier for viewers to hear his side of the story — even if they're more likely to align themselves with Percy. However, Medusa's tale about the Olympian god in Percy Jackson & the Olympians episode 3 makes his perspective even more necessary. Medusa accuses the gods of treating her unjustly, and if she's telling the truth, most viewers will be inclined to agree. It's hardly fair that Athena punishes Medusa for her tryst with Poseidon. And arguably, Percy's father shouldn't have pursued Medusa or allowed her to face Athena's wrath alone.

Medusa's story makes Poseidon look like the villain, but his and Sally's perspectives could offer a new take on his character. It's hard to say who's telling the truth when Poseidon has yet to appear in the flesh, but viewers will get to know Percy's father firsthand through this upcoming flashback. That's why it's a good thing Percy Jackson & the Olympians is including it, allowing fans to form their own opinions about the Greek god of the sea — for better or for worse.
