A Brooklyn woman died in a brutal double stabbing that left another man clinging to life — and deepening the mystery, a dog was found dead on the ground below the victim’s 11th-floor apartment, police said.
NYPD officers responding to a 911 call around 7 p.m. Friday found the dog dead outside a a building in Starrett City, on Hornell Loop near Pennsylvania Ave., said police sources.
Inside the building lobby, they found a 36-year-old man, wounded and bleeding, said the sources. And on the 11th floor, they found Donna Hyman, 58, in her apartment, dead from multiple stab wounds.
Neighbors watched as the 36-year-old victim — identified by police sources as Hyman’s son — was treated in the by paramedics in the building lobby.
“He was under a white sheet, because he was naked,” said Johadah Murphy, 17. “When he first came down, he said, ‘Oh, I need some help.’ And then he said, ‘Never mind. No one can help me.'”
The man was rushed to Brookdale Hospital in critical condition, said police.
Outside the building, Johadah saw the dead dog. “That kind of hurt me, seeing the dog out there,” he said. “It was crazy.”
The dog’s injuries were consistent with a fall from a high place, and investigators deem its death is part of the incident that took Hyman’s life, said police sources. Neighbors said they believed Hyman had a poodle.
“I feel the dog was emotional support for her,” said a building resident who declined to give her name. “Her husband passed away almost six years ago, and probably three years after, she got the dog.”
The neighbor couldn’t imagine a reason why someone would want to kill Hyman. “She was a very positive lady,” the neighbor said. “She didn’t deserve that at all.”
Neighbors said Hyman lived with her adult son. One neighbor said Hyman often quarreled with her son over her dog’s incessant barking.
“Maybe they were fighting about the dog — I guess it was barking or something,” said Elizabeth Gonzalez, 47. “I remember when we would pass by her apartment, the dog would bark a lot.”
Another neighbor, who gave her name as Rhea, described a conversation with Hyman that led her to believe the slain mother had a strained relationship with her son.
“I said, ‘Donna, your son is handsome and charming.’ She told me, ‘Handsome yes; charming — not so much.’ And that line for some reason stuck with me,” said Rhea.
“She was an extremely nice person,” Rhea said of Hyman. “We talked. She was calm.”
Gonzalez said she was floored by the news of her neighbor’s gruesome murder, saying the Starrett City building isn’t known for violence.
“This is crazy,” said Gonzalez. “We’ve been here 47 years and never seen anything like this happen.”
Hyman adopted her dog after her husband passed away six years ago, according to one neighbor.
“I feel the dog was an emotional support for her,” said the neighbor, who lives on the 11th floor. “She cared about her son and dog.”
“She did work. She was out and about. Before she continued her day she made sure to walk her dog,” the neighbor added.
Other building residents said they were shocked by the killing, as the neighborhood is quiet and relatively free of crime.
“For this to happen — it’s very rare,” said Carmen Gonzalez, 76, who said she never heard about any arguing from the 11th-floor apartment were the killing took place.
“This doesn’t normally happen,” Carmen Gonzalez said. “We’ve been here 47 years. It’s quiet. It’s very, very strange.”
Detectives have not been able to question Hyman’s son while he undergoes medical treatment, said police sources. No arrests had been reported as of Saturday evening.
