A 22-year-old man was struck and killed by two drivers early Sunday as he crossed a Bronx street, according to police.
Officials said Bronx resident Wilbert de Jesus Cordero was walking across White Plains Road near Archer Street in Parkchester around 4 a.m. when he was struck by a 2019 Mercedes Benz traveling south and launched into the northbound lanes of White Plains Road.
Cordero was then hit by a 2017 BMW heading north, according to the NYPD.
First responders took him to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi in the Bronx, where he was pronounced dead. Cordero lived about a block from where he was struck, officials said.
Police said a 24-year-old man was driving the Mercedes, but did not identify him. The BMW was being driven by 25-year-old Scarsdale resident Adam Vilajeti, per police.
Officers later arrested Vilajeti for allegedly leaving the scene of the crash and driving while intoxicated. Officials said the other driver remained on the scene and has not been charged.
Eighteen people died in New York City traffic crashes in January, including 10 drivers and eight pedestrians, according to NYC Crash Mapper, which tracks official city data on crashes. That was slightly less than the 20 people who died in local crashes in January 2023.
