SPANAWAY, Wash. — A woman involved in a head-on crash in Spanaway is dead, but officials said the cars collided at slower speeds and the victim had a gunshot wound.
According to Sgt. Darren Moss Jr. of the Pierce County Sheriff's Department, the collision occurred at 4:38 a.m. near 174th Street and Spanaway Loop Road South, just south of Spanaway Lake. Moss said the vehicles collided at a "moderate speed."
"When the driver from the other vehicle got out to check on the woman driver, they found that she was unconscious," Moss said. "When our deputies got here, they found a gunshot wound, and right now we're investigating this as a homicide. We believe she was shot while she was driving up the roadway here and then veered off to the side of the road and had this head-on collision.
"We don't know who the suspect could be. We want people to be aware."
State Route 704 has been blocked in both directions, since before 5 a.m., between milepost 5.29 near Spanaway Loop Road and milepost 5.92 near ST 7 (Pacific Avenue) as a result, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.
Moss asked anyone with information to contact the sheriff's department.
