Challengers — Zendaya’s new romantic tennis drama — includes a provocative kissing scene that involves the film’s leading trio.
In Challengers, new in theaters Friday, Zendaya plays Tashi Duncan, a tennis star on the rise who becomes the object of affection of a pair of fellow tennis standouts. Not long after Patrick Zweig (Josh O’Connor) and Art Donaldson (Mike Faist) befriend Tashi, the three engage in a long and passionate three-way kiss in the motel room where the buddies are staying at.
Aware that the steamy three-way kiss in Challengers will create a buzz among moviegoers, Zendaya told Yahoo! Entertainment that what audiences see in the film and what’s transpiring on set are two completely different vibes.
“I think with those scenes in general, they’re all very technical and are put together [in a way] more than people understand,” Zendaya explained to Yahoo! “Often — we joked about it before — but while people see the three of us, our view is like, ‘Camera, boom [microphone]’ ... There’s a whole group of us. We’re all in that room doing it together.”
Ultimately, the Euphoria star added, she needs to be aware of what’s going on from a filmmaking standpoint as much as the story she and her co-stars are telling. In the end, Zendaya likened the experience to dancing.
“So, everything is choreographed, like a dance in many ways,” Zendaya told Yahoo! “So, that’s how we kind of approach it.”
How Trust Was The Most Important Thing Between Zendaya And Her Co-Stars
After the motel kissing scene in Challengers, the story becomes much more complicated for Tashi, Patrick and Art.
Over the next 13 years, the once-close Patrick and Art become bitter rivals since Tashi starts dating Patrick. Things change, though, when Tashi suffers a career-ending injury and breaks off her romance with Patrick.
Realizing how important he is to her recovery, Tashi begins coaching Art and eventually marries and has a child with him, which creates a deeper divide between the two men.
Eventually, Art — who is suffering from a crisis of confidence in his illustrious pro career — has to participate in a match with Patrick that will either make or break him. The match is also an all-or-nothing situation for Patrick, who can barely afford to make a living since he’s refused to grow up throughout his adult life.
Ultimately, the challenge for both Art and Patrick in Challengers is to confront their painful pasts while vying for Tashi’s affections in what has become a destructive love triangle for all those involved.
While the three-way kissing scene between Zendaya, Josh O’Connor and Mike Faist is bound to be among the most discussed parts of Challengers, O’Connor noted that the success of all the scenes boils down to one common denominator.
"There are a number of aspects that make any scene work,” O’Connor told Yahoo! “I do think that trust in your other actors is vitally important, and that can be with things that are intimate like a three-way kiss or just generally doing any scene."
Directed by Luca Guadagnino, Challengers is playing in theaters.
