The hit comedy Dumb and Dumber will always be one of Jeff Daniels' most beloved films for fans. It's the opposite of what the actor had originally feared by taking part in the film, specifically because of one particularly worrisome scene.
Per USA Today, Daniels reflected on his Dumb and Dumber role in a new interview. He recalled how his agents were discouraging him from taking the role over concerns he wouldn't be able to be taken seriously as a dramatic after in following projects. However, Daniels was eager to do something different, leading to his interest in such an outlandish comedy film. He also was anticipating starring in a movie with funnyman Jim Carrey.
Jim Carrey’s Weirdest Role Isn’t What You Think
Jim Carrey's career spans almost fifty years, and in that time he's played a lot of whacky roles, but the weirdest one is a little surprising."I had agents, who weren't wrong, telling me, 'You're a serious actor. This is not the direction you need to be going. We're going to stop this and get you off this movie,' " Daniels said. "But I wanted to shake it up with a comedy. And I wanted to work with Jim Carrey."
With that said, Daniels also recognized there were certain risks he was taking with the film. He saw the potential in the benefits it may have for his career, as he was happy with the solo scenes given to his character. That helped to ensure the film wouldn't just be all about Carrey, allowing Daniels plenty of his own time to shine.
Will Ferrell Sets Career First With New Netflix Comedy Series
Will Ferrell reaches a new milestone with his role in a new comedy series announced by Netflix."It was like, I've got scenes. I knew I was going to score," Daniels said. "If [the Farrelly brothers] cut those, the movie was going to be 'Jim and the other guy.' "
Daniels was able to keep his desired scenes, but he admits that there was one that he started to worry about when it came time to start filming. That would be the famous toilet scene where Daniels' Harry is stuck in the bathroom at love interest Mary's (Lauren Holly) home after having his drink spiked with a laxative by Carrey's jealous Lloyd. The situation would be awkward enough, but it's made all the worse by Harry learning after using the toilet that it isn't able to be flushed. It's one of the most memorable scenes of the movie, but Daniels said it took a pep talk from Carrey to convince him to go through with it on the day of shooting.
Jim Carrey Told Jeff Daniels to Go All the Way With the Scene
"It's one thing to read the toilet scene, but then the day comes and we're actually going to do the toilet scene," as Daniels put it. "I told Jim, 'This is either the beginning of my career or the end of it.' Jim, who is fearless, told me, 'It's going to be great. You've just got to go all the way with it.'"
Carrey was right, as fans loved the scene, helping to make Dumb and Dumber such a huge success. Three decades later, the film remains one of the most beloved comedies of all time.
