YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (WKBN) — A city police officer and a suspect are hospitalized after an exchange of gunfire just after midnight Thursday on Youngstown’s west side.
Staff Inspector Lt. Brian Butler said officers were answering a domestic violence call in the 100 block of South Maryland Avenue when shots were exchanged between a man and police.
The man and the officer were both wounded and were both taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center.
Butler said conditions on both are not yet available.
The state Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation will determine if criminal charges should be filed.
The police department’s Internal Affairs Division will also conduct a separate investigation to ensure department policies were followed.
The last shooting by a city police officer was Oct. 12, when a 45-year-old man was shot and killed by police who were answering a burglary call on Helena Avenue.
BCI is investigating that case. A final report has yet to be released.
In August, some city police officers who are part of the Mahoning Valley Crisis Response Team were involved in a fatal shooting during a standoff in Howland.
In February, someone fired several shots at a member of the department’s Neighborhood Response Unit as he was on patrol. No arrests have been made in that case.
