Three cruise ships with no known cases of the coronavirus will dock this weekend at the Port of Oakland for a months-long stay, officials said.
The Norwegian Cruise Line vessels will dock for an estimated two to three months in areas not used for the Port’s commercial shipping business, according to a statement from the Port of Oakland.
U.S. officials have banned cruise ships, which have proven to be especially vulnerable to COVID-19 outbreaks, from operating during the pandemic. The vessels that will dock at the Oakland port are staffed with crew members but no passengers, and the crew does not plan to disembark from the ship.
“These ships are under federal requirements to report health concerns, and we understand that they haven’t had a history of coronavirus, so we’ll do what we can to help,” said Danny Wan, the Port’s executive director.
The Grand Princess ship docked temporarily at the Oakland port after it was stricken in March by a coronavirus outbreak at sea.
