New Podcast Highlights Albany Hip-Hop Scene - Spectrum News

We first met Noah John about 5 years ago, when he was playing high school football and baseball at Albany High School. Noah always carried himself on the field with so much class.

He was one of those athletes you just knew was a really good kid. His coaches spoke highly of him, but then I saw it for myself the first time I interviewed him after a game. We finished the interview and he said, "Thank you for covering our game and thank you for talking to me." I was a little taken aback, only because not all 17-year-olds think to thank the media for coverage, but I was really impressed.

What You Need To Know

  • Noah John is known around Albany as a standout athlete, but he's also a jazz musician

  • Noah, Tyson Jones, and Joey Karandy run a local podcast highlighting the hip-hop scene called "Without Warning"

  • Noah, Tyson, and Joey all played football together at Albany High School

I was so glad when I found out recently that Noah is doing big things again. In addition to being a standout athlete, he's also a musician. Noah has been playing the clarinet since he was 8 years old.

"I play a lot of jazz. I play the saxophone as well," said the rising senior at Amherst College.

Noah and two of his best friends, Tyson Jones and Joey Karandy, started a podcast called “Without Warning” about a year ago. They bring musicians into their studio above Caffe Italia in Albany. When we spent time with the guys, they were talking with local hip-hop artist and fashion designer Swanky Hendrix.

Hendrix also went to AHS, and was a year younger than Noah, Tyson, and Joey. Hendrix talked a lot about his career and his new music. He admits early on in his career there was a lot of self-questioning.

"Before I put out a song, I would sit for hours and think like, ‘are they going to like this? Is this good enough? Should I change something on this?’ " Hendrix said.

Noah, Tyson, and Joey decided they wanted to highlight the good in their community and give local artists a place to showcase their talents.

"There's not tons of resources going into promoting them, and we do have a lot of talent in this area, so that's something we kind of wanted to give a platform to," said John.

"I want to work toward making this city better, and we're trying our best to do our part," said Jones.

Even though all three are heading back to college in the next couple of weeks, they say they'll keep getting out new episodes and articles for “Without Warning.”
