The Port of Port Townsend recently received recognition from Clean Marina Washington for the port’s efforts to promote clean boating practices and pollution prevention.
In a letter addressed to the Port of Port Townsend, Blair Englebrecht of the Puget Soundkeeper Alliance lauded the work of port officials to protect water quality and properly manage waste within the marina.
The recognition listed the Herb Beck Marina in Quilcene as one of Washington’s 83 certified clean marinas across the state.
Marinas hoping to receive certification as a clean marina must complete an eligibility checklist which stipulates compliance with all land-use laws; not allowing in-water hull scraping or cleaning of underwater surfaces; limiting in-water repairs; collect and treat pressure-wash water; regular inspection of fuel transfer and storage equipment; provide and maintain a spill response plan; and proper handling of all hazardous wastes.
Clean Marina Washington is joint project of Puget Soundkeeper Alliance, EnviroStars Cooperative, Northwest Marine Trades Association, Sea Grant of Washington, Washington Department of Ecology, Washington Department of Natural Resources, and Washington State Parks and Recreation.
