A public-private partnership between the Northwest Maritime Center and the Port of Port Townsend will give young people in Port Townsend a summer job opportunity right on the water.
The program is seeking to find four participants who will work 20 hours per week as dock and RV attendants for the Point Hudson Marina.
“It was an idea that came out of the Port of Port Townsend,” said Jake Beattie, executive director at the Northwest Maritime Center. “It’s sort of an interesting way to accomplish multiple things at once.”
The mutually-beneficial arrangement gives the port a chance to increase customer service to visiting vessels, while also engaging young people with their community and with the forward-facing element of the port’s facilities.
“I immediately got excited because we’ve been thinking about doing something like this for awhile,” Beattie explained.
“We’re very excited about it. It’s a great chance for us to work together,” he said.
Beattie said the attendants will assist visitors to Point Hudson by signing them up for moorage and RV sites. They’ll also help boaters with docking and handling lines, and hand out welcome bags to visitors. They’ll also be ready to give friendly directions to out-of-towners.
The job isn’t a volunteer position, either. Attendants will be paid $15 an hour and Beattie noted that positions were still open for the program.
The program will last all summer long and attendants will work together in pairs. Prospective dock attendants must be 16 years old.
