Police early today (Friday, July 2) found the body of a man who went missing in the Port Aransas surf on Wednesday, according to Port Aransas Police Chief Scott Burroughs.
The body was identified as that of Nicholas Austin Mireles, 19, of San Antonio, Burroughs said.
PAPD officers were patrolling the beach when they discovered the body between markers nine and 10 about 2:50 a.m., according to the chief. The body was approximately 10 feet from shore, he said.
Nicholas Mireles was swimming late Wednesday morning near Marker 10 when he became distressed, and his father, Richard Allen Mireles Jr., 47, went after him to help, police said.
The father then became distressed, and he was pulled from the water by Port Aransas Surf Rescue.
Richard Mireles was given CPR on the beach by the surf rescue team, and he was taken by Port Aransas EMS to a Corpus Christi hospital. He died there Wednesday evening.
“The Port Aransas Police Department would like to extend our condolences to the Mireles family and our appreciation to the first responders and volunteers that assisted in the search to provide closure to this tragic event,” Burroughs said.
