Keanu Reeves offers a major tease about the opening sequence for John Wick 4. The latest installment in the breakout action franchise is set to premiere in May 2022, one year after it was originally scheduled. John Wick 4 was supposed to arrive earlier this year, but when the coronavirus pandemic delayed filming, Lionsgate moved it back. Reeves will once again play unstoppable hitman Wick, and he'll be joined by additional returning stars like Ian McShane, Lance Reddick, and Laurence Fishburne. John Wick 4 will also feature plenty of newcomers, including Rina Sawayama, Bill Skarsgard, Hiroyuki Sanada, and Donnie Yen.
So far, plot details for this new movie are still being kept under wraps. However, as with the previous John Wick films, there are a few clues to be found in the previous installment. 2019's John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum ended with John being betrayed by Winston (McShane) at the behest of the High Table and, after narrowly surviving some grievous injuries, uniting with the Bowery King (Fishburne) to take down the organization once and for all. Based on that, one can assume that John Wick 4 will find its title character working to end the High Table in another globe-trotting adventure.
In a recent profile with Esquire, Reeves revealed a major tease about where John Wick 4 will begin. As he prepared to leave interviewer Ryan D'Agostino, Reeves mentioned he was on his way to meet with a horse trainer. Why? "There’s a sequence—hopefully, knock on wood... in John Wick 4, the opening sequence," Reeves said. "John Wick is back in the desert on a horse. I’m going to hopefully be able to fast-gallop and run." At the time of the interview, he didn't quite know how to do that, hence the meeting with the trainer.
Not only does this suggest John Wick 4 will open with an exciting action scene, it reveals something key about the plot: There will be a time jump. The John at the end of Parabellum was hardly in the position to hop on a horse and ride through the desert, so at least a few months must've passed by the time John Wick 4 picks up. This means viewers will be plunged straight into John's battle with the High Table, skipping past his recovery and early planning stages.
Parabellum already spent some time in the desert, so it will interesting to see how John Wick 4 finds a new way to make the location exciting. It could be that the new film's desert scene will connect to what brought John out to the desert before, but that remains to be seen. Now that John Wick 4 has officially wrapped, hopefully more details will emerge soon. An official title would be a good start, though rumors suggest it will be Hagakure. Expect more updates on this front to arrive in the coming months.
