Aaron Rodgers has quickly embraced the New York sports scene - NBC Sports

2023 NBA Playoffs - Miami Heat v New York Knicks
Getty Images

Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers is taking a deep bite of the Big Apple.

The new quarterback of New York’s little brother NFL franchise has spent time last night and today at Madison Square Garden in support of one of the local hockey teams — and one of the local basketball teams.

Rodgers attended the Rangers playoff game on Saturday night, and the Knicks playoff game on Sunday. He’s fortunate the Milwaukee Bucks have been eliminated; he owns three percent of the team.

It’s smart. It’s prudent. And it’s good business. By embracing the local teams and being visible, the bond with the fans strengthens.

The stronger it is now, the better chance it will have to survive the stress that comes from the possibility of performances that fall short of the high bar that has accompanied his arrival.

‘Survivor 44’ deleted scene: ‘All hands on deck’ as castaways prepare for first storm of season [WATCH] - Yahoo Entertainment

So far during this 44th season of “Survivor,” the players have gotten lucky with the weather in Fiji. But that all changes on Day 16 at Va Va, as the remaining nine castaways prepare for their first storm of the season. In CBS’s latest “Survivor 44” deleted scene, we see Heidi Lagares-Greenblatt and Frannie Marin walking through the jungle when they’re caught off guard by thunder and wind.

“What the hell?” shouts a confused Frannie. And Heidi responds, “That’s rain. Let’s go back, we’re gonna have to get ready.”

More from GoldDerby

SEE‘Survivor’ reminder: Players cannot pass advantages to each other as votes are being read

At camp, Carson Garrett tells Carolyn Wiger that he can tell rain is coming because he can see the “inflections in the light” in the distance. (Spoken like a true NASA nerd!) “I’m gonna try to start a fire,” Carson later remarks.

In a private confessional, Carolyn explains, “We’ve had it way good. We have not had this. Honestly, coming out here, I thought that there’d be all these rain storms and I’d be like [weak] and pruny and look at my hands, and I haven’t had that yet.”

SEE‘Survivor’ winners list: All seasons

Everyone jumps into action as it’s “all hands on deck,” they declare. The shivering players grab firewood, put their clothes in the shelter, and move the fire pit under the tarp to prepare for what’s to come.

“Right now of course we’re in the rain,” Carson tells the camera as he gets drenched. “It doesn’t feel that great. I’m pretty cold. Not that comfortable. I knew it was gonna rain at some point. It’s gonna be a long day, for sure.”

Viewers who watched the ninth episode play out on TV saw how the endurance immunity challenge took place during the storm, with a drenched Frannie ultimately winning the necklace. Later at (a much drier) tribal council, Kane Fritzler was voted out in a 5–3–1–1 vote over Heidi, Jaime and Danny.

'Firefly Lane': Sarah Chalke Reveals the Most Difficult Scene She Filmed in Final Episodes (Exclusive) - Entertainment Tonight

Police investigating possible violent crime at house in west-central Topeka - WIBW

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Police were investigating what they said was a possible violent crime on Friday at a house in west-central Topeka.

The home was located at 1512 S.W. 24th, about a half-block west of S.W. Washburn Avenue.

Officers at the scene told 13 NEWS around 9:30 a.m. Friday that they were serving a search warrant in connection with an incident that occurred Thursday night.

Police responded around 3 a.m. Friday to the house in the 1500 block of S.W. 24th to continue their investigation.

Yellow crime-scene tape was placed around the single-story, beige-colored house as police investigated the scene.

Several police units and the department’s Crime Scene Investigation Unit van remained at the scene past 12:30 p.m. Friday.

Around 12:05 p.m. on Friday, about five additional Topeka police officers arrived on the scene and put on protective blue gloves and shoe coverings before they entered the house.

Officers and crime scene investigators also could be seen entering and leaving the residence earlier on Friday morning.

Additionally, police officers were seen on the back -- or north -- side of the residence.

An orange evidence marker could be seen just inside the home’s front door, which remained open during the morning and into the afternoon on Friday.

The location of the crime scene was about three blocks north of the Washburn University campus.

It was approximately nine blocks south and west of where a shooting occurred Wednesday morning that claimed a man’s life.

The capital city has recorded 16 homicides so far in 2023, compared to three at the same time in 2022.

Additional information on the incident in the 1500 block of S.W. 24th wasn’t available early Friday afternoon.

Police said further details were expected to be released later on Friday.

Check wibw.com for more details as they become available.

'Miss Congeniality' scene-stealer Heather Burns is always here to remind us that April 25 is 'the perfect date' - Yahoo Entertainment

The 2000 action-comedy Miss Congeniality was a star vehicle in the truest sense for Sandra Bullock, the Speed and Practical Magic actress who flaunted her comedic chops in an unforgettable turn as an uncouth FBI agent who goes deep undercover as a beauty pageant contestant.

But the film’s most famous line belongs to one of Bullock's co-stars — and it wasn't one of the bolder-faced, like Michael Caine or Benjamin Bratt or William Shatner or Candice Bergen.

It's from Heather Burns, who plays Cheryl Frasier — aka Miss Rhode Island.

"Describe your perfect date," Miss United States host Stanley Fields (Shatner) instructs Cheryl during an onstage interview session.

"It's a tough one," Cheryl giggles uncomfortable before dropping this gem: "I'd have to say April 25. Because it's not too hot, not too cold. All you need is a light jacket."

Miss Rhode Island is way off-course — Stan's colloquial use of "perfect date" obviously refers to a romantic outing. But one of the reasons the joke works so well is because, as far as her misinterpretation goes, Cheryl makes a great point: The end of April is generally beautiful, weather-wise, in most parts of the country.

It’s no wonder Cheryl winds up winning Miss United States at the end of the movie (spoiler alert) — with Bullock's special agent Gracie Hart (who saves Cheryl from a detonating tiara) being named first runner-up.

That also allowed Burns to return for the 2005 sequel Miss Congeniality: Armed and Fabulous as Miss United States.

As for April 25, there's a very good reason for that specific date to be the subject of Cheryl's reply: director Donald Petrie has admitted that he changed the date from the script to honor his wife's birthday.

Speaking to E! News, Burns, 48, says she can't escape from the iconic scene — and that's a good thing. "I love it. It seems to each year get a little bigger even.

"And it's such a nice day for me because people come out of the woodwork sending me memes and things. And I go around town … people give me free coffee and, you know, it's just everyone's kind of happy to see me on that day."

Burns also admits to E! News that she has little in common with Cheryl. She had to dye her hair blond because her natural hair color was too similar to Bullock's. She got a coach to help her learn to twirl and a stand-in (a student from the University of Texas, Austin) handled the flaming batons. What about her ties Rhode Island? "I have no connection to that state, except I think some of my ancestors came there in the 1600s."

In 2022, Burns celebrated her iconic line with a post on Instagram. "Wishing everyone love, light, and a PERFECT DATE!" Burns wrote in a caption to a photo from the film featuring herself and Bullock.

(Photo: Instagram/Heather Burns)

For the film's 20th anniversary, Shatner cheekily partnered with Match for a contest to find people's perfect dates — the romantic, as opposed to calendar, kind.

Burns's other movie credits include You’ve Got Mail, Two Weeks Notice (also with Bullock), Bewitched and Manchester by the Sea.

She's married to actor Ajay Naidu, who owns plenty of iconic lines himself from his role as Samir Nagheenanajar in the 1999 cult classic Office Space.

Tell Us About An Absolutely Perfect TV Scene That Will Stay With You Forever - BuzzFeed

I could write an entire essay based on this one impactful scene — that's how unforgettable it is. In it, Zuko's entire character development and narrative arc reach its peak, as he combines firebending techniques with elements of airbending, earthbending and waterbending he's learned through his travels with Aang to defeat his sister, Azula. It's an eye-opening moment because the Zuko we see here is so different from the one we met in Season 1. He's calm, his movements are precise, and he's no longer controlled by his impulsiveness and destructive actions. That, set against the somber soundtrack as well as seeing Azula's mental state deteriorate, truly makes this one of the best and most impactful things I have ever watched.

Detroit Police Find Neurosurgeon Devon Hoover Dead in Disturbing Crime Scene - The Daily Beast

On Sunday night, police carried out a wellness check at the home of a revered neurosurgeon who had failed to show up at a family party. In the attic of the property belonging to Dr. Devon Hoover in Detroit’s historic Boston-Edison District, officers found a scene of horror.

Hoover’s lifeless body was found wrapped up in a plastic sheet with a single gunshot wound to the head. His car was also later found ditched at a separate location, according to FOX 2. As of Tuesday, no arrest had been made in the case as investigators still worked to establish the circumstances around the grim killing. According to CBS Detroit, police believe the shooting may have been “related to a domestic incident that turned deadly.”

Neighbors and patients who Hoover treated through Ascension Healthcare at St. John Hospital in Detroit were shocked by news of the 53-year-old’s brutal death. “I went on Facebook and I saw his picture and thought oh, he must’ve gotten an award,” Julia, one of Hoover’s patients, told WXYZ. “So I put my glasses on and my daughter was outside with the dog and I just started screaming, ‘Oh, my God, oh, my God.’”

Julia was one of countless people who paid tribute to the slain doctor. She says she never lost her ability to walk after being treated by him for a spinal problem in 2008. “I respect him. I thank him because my life in the last 15 years could’ve been way different without him.”

His distraught patients also spoke out about their shock and heartbreak in a “Justice for Dr. Devon Hoover” Facebook group created Monday. There, Joni Yankitis called Hoover “an incredibly kind and talented neurosurgeon.” “He was a gentle soul, explaining the procedures I had to undergo with patience and always made sure I was comfortable,” Yankitis added, saying she was “sad and angry that his life was senselessly ended.”

Friends and neighbors similarly expressed their disbelief at his death. Jonathan Shearrod, who lives down the block from where Hoover resided for about 15 years, said his generous neighbor would be “extremely missed.” “It’s gonna take some time to like wrap your head around what has happened,” he told the Detroit News. “I just can’t imagine anyone experiencing that in their home or just having to face that kind of terror where you live.”

Shearrod said the neurosurgeon lived alone at the home but would regularly welcome others for neighborhood functions and celebrations, and had even hosted weddings for his colleagues’ relatives. “He’s an anchor of the block, extremely involved in the neighborhood,” Shearrod said. “He’s just a wonderful person. I mean, the home looks amazing because he was an ardent reservationist, restorationist.”

“Devon Hoover, MD, was a dedicated and well respected member of the Ascension Michigan family and will be greatly missed by our community,” Ascension said in a statement. “Our sincerest condolence and heartfelt prayers are with his family, friends and fellow associated during this incredibly difficult time.”

How the Houston restaurant scene has transformed over the last decade - Houston Public Media

A tray of barbecued meats
The evolving barbecue scene was one of the biggest developments of the past ten years restaurant-wise in Houston, according to local food writers.

When we were first getting this show rolling a decade ago, then Houston Matters producer Edel Howlin came to host Craig Cohen with an idea.

She thought we should bring some area food critics together to talk about their favorite restaurants. It could be a monthly conversation built around different themes, and it could be a way to expose listeners to restaurants they might not normally think to visit. And maybe they'd find some new favorites along the way.

Naturally, exhibiting the remarkable instincts Craig’s always had for such things, he told her he thought it was a bad idea.

Ten years on, The Full Menu remains a monthly staple on our show, and one of the more popular things we do. So, yeah, important lesson learned – listen to the producers. Ignore Craig.

As Houston Matters prepares to celebrate its 10th anniversary, and we wrap up our series examining how Houston has changed in the past decade, we brought in our panelists from The Full Menu to discuss how the restaurant scene in Houston has changed in that time.

In the audio above, you’ll hear the thoughts of Eric Sandler, food editor at CultureMap Houston, Felice Sloan, who writes the Swanky Maven lifestyle blog, and David Leftwich, author at Houston Food Finder.

S&M Scene in ‘Great Expectations’ Defended by BBC Content Chief, Writer Steven Knight Was ‘Reading Between the Lines’ of Dickens’ Novel - Variety

Charlotte Moore, chief content officer at the BBC, has defended the decision of screenwriter Steven Knight, best known for “Peaky Blinders,” to spice up Charles Dickens’ “Great Expectations” in his television adaptation, now airing on the broadcaster.

Referring to an S&M scene in the show, in which a naked Mr. Pumblechook (played by Matt Berry) is seen being whipped by housewife-turned-dominatrix Mrs. Gargery (played by Hayley Squires), Moore said that Knight “believes absolutely everything [in the show] comes from what was alluded to” by Dickens in the novel.

Moore, speaking Thursday to the Broadcasting Press Guild in London, added that “you have to really understanding what [Dickens] would have felt able to write about [in the Victorian era] and read between the lines.”

Another of Knight’s embellishments in the show is that Miss Havisham, played by Olivia Colman, is portrayed as a sadistic opium addict.

In an interview with the BBC last month, Knight said he wanted to view the story through a modern lens. “You couldn’t write about certain things in Dickens’ time: certain elements of sexuality, crime, disobedience against the crown and state. What I tried to do was imagine if Dickens was writing the story now and had the freedom to go to those darker places, what would he do? If he had been liberated to write the things that were going on that he wasn’t allowed to write about.”

Pressed on why the BBC had chosen to update a classic text in this way instead of commissioning new work, Moore said: “Because I think it’s a great way to bring loved texts to new audiences, and to find new interpretations.” She added that it was important to “push the boundaries of storytelling,” and “reinvent [classic novels] for a modern age.”

Asked what creative gaps existed in the scripted arena, Moore said that she and Lindsay Salt, director of BBC Drama, had greenlit a lot of thrillers, but she would like dramas in other genres like romance and comedy, and relationship dramas like Abi Morgan’s “The Split,” which “had a very different tone.”

She added: “We are always looking for different tones and genre that we haven’t [done before]. You’re always looking for things that will surprise you.”

Although she lauded hard-hitting cop drama “Blue Lights,” she also expressed a desire for lighter fare. “I think everyone’s dealing with so much angst and strife at the moment, having something that’s a bit more escapist would be good,” she said.

In terms of BBC-backed films, she praised Raine Allen-Miller’s romantic comedy “Rye Lane” for its “change in tone.”

Moore was asked whether the BBC would continue to produce dramas about controversial subjects, especially those based on real events, such as the one to be written and directed by Peter Kosminsky about the tragic fire at Grenfell Tower in West London. A petition opposed to the drama, stating “tragedy isn’t entertainment,” has gathered almost 58,000 names.

Moore said the broadcaster had a “really strong track record” in this area, and “drama had a real place to tell [true] stories, particularly putting an emotional and historical context on stories that perhaps we read, but don’t really put ourselves in those worlds, and [say] what would we have done?”

She added: “Of course you have to handle stories with real integrity, and a sense of sensitivity and responsibility.”

Moore said she would not veto such projects. “I don’t think it would be right for me to ever censor ideas from very respected writers who have a track record of writing about such subjects, but of course, it will evolve, and I know there’s huge sensitivity.”

Kosminsky’s dramas have included “The Government Inspector,” about the death of Dr. David Kelly, one of the British experts on weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, and “The State,” about four British citizens who join ISIS in Syria.

The Mandalorian Season 3 Finale's Post-Credits Scene Choice Explained - Men's Health

The following story contains spoilers for the Season 3 finale of The Mandalorian, titled "The Return."

IT WAS an absolutely action-packed and emotion-fueled Season 3 finale for The Mandalorian, one that saw an incredible aerial battle between a Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff)-led army of Mandalorian warriors (including The Armorer (Emily Swallow)), a final showdown between Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal), Grogu, and the evil Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito), a Mythosaur sighting, and perhaps the most adorable adoption in the history of Mandalore (This is, indeed, the way).

In fact, so much happened in the Season 3 finale—titled "The Return"—that one could probably make the case that if this was the last episode of The Mandalorian (and it's not, because Season 4 has already been written) that we'd be pretty content with the ending. Most of the major plot threads of the show's first three seasons—Grogu's path, Din and Grogu's bond, the Darksaber, Moff Gideon—have largely wrapped up, and the season ends with Din and Grogu just kicking back with some good times.

But that can't just be it, can it? Keep in mind that after Season 2's sad, sad finale (which saw Grogu heading off to Jedi training with Luke Skywalker) we got a tease after the credits of Boba Fett re-taking Jabba the Hutt's palace for himself with the help of Fennec Shand. This was a direct set-up for The Book of Boba Fett, which would debut just around a year later.

Could The Mandalorian Season 3 have a similar trick up its sleeve?

Does The Mandalorian Season 3 Finale have an after-credits scene?

Disney+

It does not. And that's great! We've seen Din and Grogu go through absolute hell since we first met them back when Season 1 debuted in 2019. Remember how sad (and, honestly, over-violent) Din was in The Book of Boba Fett when he was separated from his little friend/now-son?

Surely there will be more trouble, and, thus, more adventures ahead. But for now, we can all be happy that these two have found a little bit of peace in the cabin that Greef Karga (Carl Weathers) got for them on Nevarro. And there's plenty of room for Grogu to practice The Force on frogs, so really, truly, no complaints from anyone.

Of course, we know that there's more Star Wars trouble coming very soon. Ahsoka, also from the team of Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni, will hit Disney+ later this year, and we know that the titular character, Ahsoka Tano (played in live-action by Rosario Dawson) is already a friend of both Din and Grogu. If she finds her hands full at any point with the villainous Grand Admiral Thrawn (or any other Imperial remnants she crosses paths with), it's not hard to imagine a favor being called in with our favorite Mandalorian bounty hunter and young apprentice.
