Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny actor Shaunette Renée Wilson asked director James Mangold to change the script regarding a scene she considered problematic and offensive.
In an interview with Variety, Wilson talked about expressing her concerns to Mangold, "I was quite impressed by a lot of things, but I also had thoughts and wanted to make input about my character in particular. And the Brilliance of James Mangold is his ability to collaborate, and he heard me out, and he was very honest about it and took what I said, and it was implemented in the re-writes," the actor said. "That has been a wonderful part of this process, to be able to feel like you are integral and you have a point of view when it comes to what's being written," she added.
Wilson went into more detail regarding Mangold's script and the scene in question, "Well, I don't want to spoil too much, but my character had a particular way of exiting the film and initially I found it to be a little bit problematic and offensive," she intimated. " I was like we probably don't need to say these words or have it done this way, and this something I am uncomfortable with," she also said. Wilson was effusive in her praise for the extremely collaborative Mangold, who she revealed, was receptive to her proposed revisions.
Wilson's Casting in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
Wilson featured in 2018's Black Panther and has had recurring roles on shows such as The Resident and Billions before appearing in Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Wilson reportedly did not have to audition before she was cast to play a government agent in the film, "Funny enough, I didn't audition for this at all. I literally just had a meeting with James. They were like, 'Read this script, see what you think.' Obviously, it's Indiana Jones, so I was going to do it no matter what," she said.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will star Harrison Ford as the titular character for the last time. Wilson shared what it was like to be cast alongside Ford and what she had learned from the legendary actor, "Have fun. You are never too old to have fun. His inner child is always at play. He loves the craft so much and loves what he does." she gushed. Wilson was also praised for fellow cast-mates Mads Mikkelsen, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and Boyd Holbrook.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is currently playing in theaters.
